The Columbia Zine Blog Issue

As promised this issue is all about the blog. We don't know if blogs wlll be the dominate form of future news but they certainly offer a chance for features and extended commentary with people and their opinions. So this week, the students are letting it rip at their individual blogs.

Student Corey Beckum likes music and wrote about digital vs. vinyl recording at his blog

Emily Clemons decided to go filmic talking about Pontypool, a film that lots of people have not seen but might want to see right away, particularly with World War Z opening any day.

Quidra Cothran is getting in gear to move to a new four year school and her blog talks about that process of transition. It is a stressful time and we wish all of our transfers well. I've been there.

Tiffany Greene covered the Spring fling thing and used a colorful way to cover the event with a Spring theme.

If you are an audiophile and a jazz enthusiast you will love David Holbrook's long and varied blog with gobs of links to songs and videos and utube clips to various classic jazz artists. David loves the music and his picks are clever and well described. A real find.
Broderick Kenner always exhibits a sharp sense of humor, normally about himself. A person that can laugh at one self is never likely to appear the fool because they already know their own faults thoroughly. Read Broderick's insightful editorial.

Kevid Ott is another music fan and his blog is filled with rock and post rock descriptions of notable established and emerging bands.

We threw in a little description of the Spring Fling! There was also a little description of Rusty Summerville and the Pryor Art Gallery upcoming art competition.  Also the faculty and staff awards ceremony honored many of our own.

One of our top faculty members, memorable lecturers, and a great humanitarian, Aubrey Flagg is retiring from Columbia State this year after forty years of instruction and inspiring generations of students with a mission to care for their planet, their community, and most of all for each other. Jarrett Scott does a fitting and warm tribute to a great man in his 9 things I learned from Professor Flagg. A great article about Aubrey's final time with the college was written by a former student and published inthe daily herald....here.

Kaysia Taylor was like so many students, trying to make sense of new technology and explain it to her family. Her talk on cell phones and how people use technology is a great way for anyone to enter the debate on technology.

Michael Tipper wanted to Discuss the passing of country music legend, George Jones this week. it was a great idea and a tribute to the multi-talented and often overlooked king of the honky tonks.

Josh Taylor covered the football scene and explored a series of articles about the game and particularly the Tennessee Titans draft picks. The team needs a lift and this could be it. Insight into the business of sports. Good reporting, Josh.

Rusty Summerville, our Pryor Art Gallery director is announcing a new competition the From the Heart Competition for artists in Middle Tennessee. This will be a juried show that will be on display in the Pryor Gallery from July 1 to July 31. The entries are due on May 22, and there is a $500 prize for the winning entry. Welcome to an experimental edition of the Columbia Zine. This week the entire issue is conducted through blogs. You'll journey from this blog to all the wonderful stories the students generated. If you have trouble connecting to any of the linked blogs, tell me and we'll try to fix the problem. Like all technology there will be problems, but roll with it.
